the problem employee

Performance Appraisal & Problem Employee Reflective Journal Entry

To be honest, I didn't know what the lesson was until I got into class.  I learned that personality tests can be super accurate! That thing was spot on with me.  The lesson also reiterated that I should not make assumption about people, because they will some how always surprise you.  I  also realized how much I hate the idea of self evaluation.  But I definitely see the importance of evaluations.  I think it is an essential part of our career progression to be evaluated so you are able to identify your strengths and weaknesses.  That way you can use your strengths, and work on your weaknesses.  I can utilize this lesson in my career by getting to know people, and giving them a chance to prove themselves before I judge them.  I think the whole guessing stuff about each other was a fun little activity.

TEAM -TEAM-TEAM

I must admit, the team building games were pretty fun.  I think I learned a lot about my teammates.  We all worked really well together, and no one person tried to dominate the others.  At the beginning of each activity we would all evaluate each others strengths and decide who had the best idea/skills for that particular obstacle.
I have always been the person who steps up and take the lead in team building exercises, but today I tried to fall back a little and see what happened.  I realized that I dont always have to be in control of the situation   (my husband would say otherwise).  Sometimes I have a hard time letting other people lead, because I think I have the easiest or most efficient way of accomplishing things.  It is important for me to learn how to be lead. Being blindfolded and led through the hallways was a great way for me to let go of my pride and trust in someone else's directions.

Hiring

Expected: I expected to learn different aspects of the hiring process, what to look for in new employees, and how to go about selecting the right candidate.

Actual: what I actually learned was that apparently I am lucky to have a job, because I am Sooo Not prepared to have a "real"interview. I HATE the interview questions, hate talking about myself, and would way rather hire someone with a personality over someone who is serious and super professional.

Utilize: This lesson will definitely be helpful in my career.  Obviously I want to continue to move up the ladder and go On to bigger and better things, but to do that I am going to have to interview for positions. That means I need to brush up on my interviewing skills.  I also hope to be involved in hiring employees, so it will be helpful to know how to interview, and what to look for in candidates.

Troy, ya done good. I think this class is turning out to be one of the most helpful classes of the program.

Leadership.

"If your actions inspire others ti dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are leader."
                                -John Quincy Adams

I'm not going to lie, I didn't put much thought into what today's class was going to be about.  I figured it would just be one of those typical "work together problem solving, figure out who the leaders is" games.  Buuuutttt, I actually really enjoyed todays lesson. I usually hate the "evaluate yourself" questionnaires, but  this is one that I can apply in real life.  I recently got promoted to be the back office manager position at work and this will help be to know what my strengths and weaknesses are.  One thing I didn't about class was that we kept categorizing all managers to be very task oriented, and added a negative connotation to a manager position, and all the praise to leaders.  I feel that a good manager has the ability to be a good leader and manager. That they are able to set the pace and example, approach problems in a bureaucratic, unbiased fashion, and yet still be able to delegate responsibilities and ensure tasks are completed.

1. Share what you had expected to learn about the topic before the class.
2. What you actually learned from the unit.
3. How you will utilize the information learned in your nursing practice.
4. You personal feelings about the material covered.
When finished with your entry, place one sentence in this assignment stating your Reflective Journal/Blog entry has been made.
